In 1835 he became the pastor of Mercer St. Presbyterian Church in New York City. "Here he remained more than twelve years, a period in the church's history characterized by able preaching and religious revival. He also gave much aid in the work of establishing and stabilizing Union Theological Seminary. From its founding, in 1836, he was a director, and in 1848, when poor health compelled him to relinquish his pastorate, a parishioner endowed a chair of sacred rhetoric there, with special reference to its occupancy by Skinner... During his career he did noteworthy work in systematizing the teaching of homiletics and in promoting broader theological views and closer interdenominational relations."--Dict. of Amer. Biography. XVII:201-202.
