Alexander Campbell (1788-1866) one of the founders of the Disciples of Christ. "Believing in the power of the press, Alexander Campbell started the Christian Baptist in 1823, and built up a successful periodical, through which he disseminated his opinions. The paper was printed at home and its success encouraged him to continue the printing business uninterruptedly for forty years. In his paper he attacked missions, Sunday-schools, and sectarian societies as then conducted, carrying the war vigorously into the enemies' camp, and censuring the clergy in particular... From 1830 his interest in the second coming of Christ led him to publish the Millennial Harbinger instead of the Christian Baptist. His publishing interests in a small community were so large that the Federal government established a post office for him and made him postmaster, an office which he held for thirty years."--Dict. of Amer. Biography, III:447-8.
