WHITE, WILLIAM. Ms. Note On The Church in America by William White 1747-1836. (New York, 1877) 18 x 28cm. Comprises 4 lithographed sheets of White's autograph comments and notes, a 5th sheet with a steel engraved portrait of White by Buttre after Sully, all laid into printed wrappers. Wrappers soiled and chipped, wrapper split along spine and repaired with Japanese paper, insert pages & wrapper with light foxing. "Among the papers left by the Rt. Rev. William White D.D. Bishop of Pennsylvania and for forty years the Senior Bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church in America, was found a printed copy of one of his Charges to his Dioceses, on the blank pages at the end of which, in his hand-writing, is annexed (photo-lithographed) statement relating to a controversy which happily ended in his being the means of connecting the American Church by the English succession with the Church of his forefathers... The accompanying engraving of Bishop White, Atat 81, is taken from the portrait by Thomas Sully (March, 1829), also in the possession of his great-grandson, New York, Easter Tide, 1877."
