THOM, WILLIAM and ALEXANDER KILHAM. Out-lines of a Constitution; Proposed for the Examination, Amendment & Acceptance, of the Members of the Methodist New Itinerancy. By Wm. Thom, and Alex. Kilham, Ministers of the Gospel. Consider of it, take advice, and speak your minds. Judges xix.30. Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is Liberty. 2 Cor. iii.17. Leeds: Printed in 1797. [Price Four-Pence.]. 12mo in 6's. Disbound pamphlet, light damp stain on inner portion of pages, light foxing. Collation: A-D6. Pagination: iv, [5]-48pp. Alexander Kilham (1762-1798) "one of the most celebrated characters in the history of Methodism, the founder of the `New Connection of Wesleyan Methodists,' frequently called simply `Kilhamites,' and really the first man in the Methodist connection who advocated the representation of the lay element in the government of the Church. ...At the next Conference [1796], however, he was severely criticised for his assertion of the popular rights, and for the publication of a pamphlet on the Progress of Liberty, in which he urged a distribution of the power of government between the clerical and the lay elements. In the course of the controversy severe remarks had been thrown out by Kilham which were construed by the preachers into defamations of the society, and at the London Conference of 1796 he was formally arraigned, and expelled from the connection. This summary process precipitated the division of sentiment, and resulted in the establishment of an independent body (now known as the New Connection Methodists) in 1797 at Ebenezer Chapel. ...What he actually sought to accomplish was the entire separation of the Methodists from the Established Church, with a due representation of the lay element in the government of the new Church, to be formed at once."--J.H. Workman in McCLintock & Strong: Cycl. Bibl. Theol. & Eccl. Lit. V:78-79. From the "Advert
